Ediciones El Viso

Who we are?

Ediciones El Viso was founded back in 1981 in order to explore and review a publishing field that was largely undiscovered at that time: that of exhibition catalogues and art books.

Over the last thirty years, since Ediciones El Viso undertook its numerous projects within this field, more than one thousand and one hundred monographs and art collection catalogues and exhibition catalogues have been published, including museum catalogues. In this respect, the company has now built up its own select publishing collection.
Due to the considerable experience it has acquired, Ediciones El Viso is a highly specialized publishing company and constitutes a key point of reference with regard to the production of highquality art books. The many clients that have entrusted their publications to Ediciones El Viso include prestigious museums, foundations and art centres located throughout Spain, the United States and many other parts of the world.

Ediciones El Viso began its activities at a time when public institutions and private bodies were working intensely to organize exhibitions and create an appropriate cultural infrastructure in Spain. Many of the monographs and catalogues it has published since then have become key points of reference over the years, reflecting Spain’s dynamic cultural scene. It was on these early publications that the publishing company based its initial prestige. Today, El Viso’s reputation is based on the degree of excellence of the books it publishes, among which we might highlight the famous catalogue for the Velasquez Exhibition staged at the Prado Museum, of which more than three hundred thousand copies were printed, not to mention the company’s co;publications with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

These efforts have been recognized on various occasions: the ASDA European Award, presented in Paris, for Best Art Catalogue, published for the Prado Museum’s exhibition entitled “Goya: Caprice and Invention”; First Prize from the Ohio Museum Association for Best Book, for “Dresden in the Ages of Splendor and Enlightenment”; a Merit Award at the New York Book Show; the American Graphic Design (Award for Communication and Graphic Design) ... various of our publications have also received awards from the Spanish Ministry of Culture for Best Published Book.

Although the publishing company was initially housed in one of the characteristic buildings that make up the El Viso development, from which its takes its name and anagram, today we occupy a spacious loft at Nº 350, calle López de Hoyos, (28043) Madrid.
